SO YOU SAY YOU WANNA GET AWAY
Happy Sunday ya’ll! I wanted to share a recent trip that we took to Asheboro, NC. I shared on Instagram that Michael and I took a quick trip to Asheboro to stay in a Getaway House! My birthday is October 21st and our Anniversary is October 20th. Of course, like most people, we had plans to travel internationally to celebrate but those were quickly postponed. I still wanted to do something fun and travel somewhere but I am pretty set on only going to places that are drive-able. I have followed Getaway House on Instagram for a while so I thought it would be a cool experience! I booked our trip for October 15th and kept it a surprise from Michael! We both love the outdoors and were in desperate need of a chill vacation. I thought I’d share our experience and some tips for those of you who told me you want to go to a Getaway House!
(1) We loved the short drive! So I have only been to Asheboro a handful of times and every time was to visit the NC Zoo. I was a little curious how the outpost would be set up since I really don’t know much about the city. I was surprised how much it felt like we were in Asheville. We got the feel of being in Asheville with a shorter drive. It only took us a little longer than an hour to get there from Raleigh!
(2) I booked early. So I did not intend to book our stay on a Thursday. However, Getaway House books FAST! I booked our trip in AUGUST and just about every weekend was already booked and most Fridays as well. Personally I knew I wanted to go some time in October because the weather is usually pretty pleasant. I didn’t want it to be so cold that we wouldn’t enjoy spending most of our time outside. It was great because it was warm enough during the day to eat outside at restaurants but by night it was cool enough to sit around the fire.
(3) We ate out. So when I initially booked the Getaway House, I briefly played myself and was convinced that I would cook. I quickly nixed that idea. I love to grill out but cooking on the open fire or in a small kitchen is not it for me lol I started googling the highest rated restaurants in Asheboro and found a bunch of great places, all downtown Asheboro and only a few miles from the outpost. We had dinner at Magnolia 23 and it was very good. All their seating is outside so if it was too cold we would have just ordered takeout. We had a classic southern dinner (ie fried chicken, collard greens, yams, cornbread, etc). It felt good to support a small business and also not to burn myself cooking a halfway raw hamburger. The next day we went to The Table for breakfast. We were slightly annoyed because the website says breakfast is served until 11am but when we got there at 10:45am we were told they stop serving breakfast at 10:30am, so we missed out on pancakes. You know when you have your mouth ready for something and you don’t get it, it’s a sad day lol We ended up staying and ordering lunch. Michael got the Southern Polenta Bowl and he said it was really good. I got the Plain and Simple sandwich and it was good but the star was the slice of chocolate cake. It was very good. This would be a good place to grab sandwiches from and take back to your outpost.
Other restaurants we considered trying: The Taco Loco, Hamilton’s Steakhouse & Something Different
(4) We brought the dogs. One thing I loved about Getaway House is that they are pet friendly. We have two dogs and sometimes using a dog sitter makes prepping for a trip that much more laborious. I decided we would bring the dogs and thought they were love the outdoors (because they usually do). If you follow me on Instagram, you know how it went with the dogs. One was a bit hesitant but she got on board and the other was over it and kept trying to run away! ahahaha I will say that if you have dogs that are skittish or not that comfortable with new surroundings, I probably wouldn’t bring them.
(5) Grocery shop before you go. Although we ate out for our meals, I did want to make s’mores while we were at our Getaway House. I had planned to get everything in Raleigh before we left but didn’t want Michael to suspect that we were going camping lol We waited until we were in Asheboro and I swear everybody was out of graham crackers! As you can see from the pictures, we used some random wafer cookies we found at Lowe’s Foods. You may have a better chance of getting everything you need if you just shop before your trip. Just an FYI.
Overall we loved it and loved how disconnected we felt. There is no Wifi so don’t try and bring your computer and really plan to disconnect. We are already talking about visiting again and would love to try another location!
